Commercial - Office cum door gallery
1400 sqft
Located in the tropical landscape of Ernakulam, Kerala, this project involved the adaptive reuse of a standard rental structure into a specialized gallery and office for an importer of steel doors. The design strategy was defined by a departure from conventional retail displays; rather than a repetitive showroom layout, a single, monumental door is featured on the facade as a sculptural focal point.
The remaining exterior envelope was opened to allow for natural ventilation and light, filtered through intricate brick jalis. The program is split into two distinct wings: a minimalist product gallery and a functional administrative core comprising a lobby, manager’s suite, and staff facilities. To ground the project in its environment, a microclimate was curated using integrated water features and lush landscaping. The project is a study in sustainable sourcing, utilizing reclaimed metal sheets for boundary walls, reused bricks for interior partitions, and salvaged timber for the entrance portal, creating an authentic, cost-effective tropical atmosphere.
